Slipknot
– Duality
Time: 3:34
Production cost: Between $300,000 and
$500,000
Recorded: March 27, 2004
Hardcore music is a medium for them to
unleashing their anger, and has to some extent probably become a way of therapy
for their feelings. The lyrics, “I’ve waited as my time’s elapsed” is them
saying they have been waiting until their demise comes so that their pain can
finally end (as shown in the lyrics “If the pain goes on, I’m not gonna make
it!”). They even talk about how they push their fingers into their eyes to stop
the ache so this could be linked to them wearing their masks to disguise their
pain.
The masks could be part of their duality
due to them wanting to be ghosts of themselves and not living in the bodies
that they’re currently in hence the lyrics, “Or separate the skin from bone”.
The lyrics “Tell me the reality is better
than the dream” is basically them saying that they have been living in a dream
that they’ve wanted to be their reality all their lives signifying that they’ve
been through pain since their childhood. This could be linked to their
real-life struggles as they were bullied in school.
Camera movements and Editing
The camera movements are hectic, which
mirrors the theme of the song, and how they feel inside as they feel bottled up
with everything fizzing inside. The
Camera moves around showing various different people which expresses that
despite they’re feelings they are still a unit. Close ups also help with
expressing the anger the people feel.
The slow motion reflects the ‘’pain’’, this
can be seen in the lyric ‘’I push my fingers into my eyes, It’s the only thing
that slowly stops the ache’’.
Mise-En-Scene
The fact that they’re not wearing clothing
on the top of their body helps convey their anger, and sort of gives them a
madness look. The house is set in a Fan’s house who was renovating, and the
extras were all fans. This insinuates how much their fans love them as they
probably connect with their feelings.
